(born 1946 in Marseille) is an international photo artist and painter. His work is characterized by provocative, philosophically profound photographs printed on brushed aluminum panels, which stand out for their extraordinary luminosity.
Scientific Career & International Milestones
Alain Marie looks back on an impressive international career: As a PhD biochemist (Canadian Ph.D. and French D.Sc.), he worked for around 12 years in scientific research in France, Canada, and Munich. Subsequently, he worked in the patent field in The Hague and Munich. After concluding his scientific career, he now dedicates himself entirely to his passions: photo art and painting.
The places he has lived—France, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, and Austria—shape his cosmopolitan, analytical perspective on art.
Philosophical Photo Art: The Aesthetics of the Ugly & Watzlawick
Alain Marie’s photo art aims to stimulate an internal dialogue in the viewer, in the spirit of the ancient “Know thyself.” His provocative works explore themes of emptiness, infinity, loneliness, and the aesthetics of the ugly. Through subtle digital alterations, he illustrates that behind visible reality, there is always another, deeper reality hidden (based on the constructivist theory of Paul Watzlawick).
Technique & Materiality: Printing on Brushed Aluminum Panels
A special feature of his photographic artworks is the high-quality printing on brushed aluminum panels (Alu-Dibond). The brushed metal surface interacts fascinatingly with ambient light, creating increased luminosity and a metallic shimmer.
- Carrier material: Brushed aluminum (Alu-Dibond Butlerfinish)
- Effect: Light-reflecting luminosity and metallic depth
- Themes: Philosophy, aesthetics of the ugly, loneliness, Watzlawick constructivism
