Malte Lüdemann

Contemporary abstract water photography, long exposures & maritime photo art from Hamburg

Malte Lüdemann is a contemporary photographic artist from Hamburg. His fascination with the medium of photography has been with him since his youth. Since 2023, Lüdemann has focused intensively on fine art photography: on extensive forays along the Elbe, he discovered water as a powerful, changeable element and made the dynamics of the waves the central subject of his work. His pieces move in an exciting dialogue between calm minimalism, expressive abstraction, and the raw power of the sea.

"The focus is not on the documentary depiction of water, but on the emergence of fleeting forms and reflections. Water becomes the starting point for a visual examination of the tension between reality and abstraction, control and chance, and transience and permanence."

Artistic visual language, technique & philosophy

Malte Lüdemann's photographic work is characterized by visual deceleration and the transformation of real movement sequences into painterly pictorial worlds. Through the targeted use of long exposures and Intentional Camera Movement (ICM), he dissolves the concrete subject matter and creates fluid, almost tangible traces of images. The Hamburg-based photographer uses digital post-processing in a deliberately puristic manner—it serves primarily to precisely accentuate and harmoniously enhance the colors and light reflections already present in nature. This results in works of art that preserve the fleeting moment and open up new, fascinating perspectives on maritime natural phenomena for the viewer.
